When I was eleven years old and had started fifth grade I noticed that the hair growth on my body increased rapidly. Hair started growing in unusual parts of my body and I noticed this was only happening to me as I would receive strange and hateful comments from my classmates in the changing room before physical education class. When I told adults in my surrounding about my problems they all told me its normal because I was going through puberty and that hair growth is a part of it. But why it was only happening to me and none of the other girls in my class was a question that no one could answer. I also started getting powerful pains in my ovaries and and I didn’t understand why. I was not ready to seek help because I was embarrassed to talk about my body. I also believed what I had been told about puberty and that it was completely normal. Another year passed and at this point 80% of my body was covered in dark, visible and thick hairs. The pain in my ovaries kept coming and I couldn’t stand it anymore so I built up the courage to finally see a doctor. My doctor discovered through a blood sample that I had an excess of masculine hormones and I was sent to ”Liljeholmens children’s hospital” to receive further help. After another year passed I finally got a referral to undertake diathermy permanent hair removal treatment. A big thank you to my parents who have been supporting me and Leila for all the help.
